Time to Trim Trees: Emerald Ash Borer Hibernates

If you have an ash tree in your yard now is the perfect time to trim it up or take it down.

The emerald ash borer, a beetle that attacks and kills ash trees, is hibernating until spring.

The beetle is inactive between Labor Day and May 1st most years, but since this year has been unusually warm, it was active through September. October 1st marks the end of the beetle’s active season and we shouldn’t see it again until May.

The emerald ash borer has caused the deaths of millions of ash trees in 15 states. Since about 20 percent of the trees in Minneapolis are ash trees, these beetles are a major concern.

In order to slow the spread of the beetle, the Minnesota Department of Agriculture has issued a state quarantine on firewood, ash trees, and tree products in Hennepin, Ramsey, Houston and Winona counties.
