Road Reopens After Chemical Spill in St. Anthony
News

A road in St. Anthony is back open after a commercial pool truck leaked a hazardous chemical Thursday.

The chlorine and hydrochloric acid spill closed five blocks along 37th Avenue Northeast. The spill caused no danger beyond the immediate area, according to authorities.

The area still had a foul smell Thursday afternoon because of the chemicals that were spilled from a truck, according to New Brighton Public Safety, one of the agencies that responded to the scene.

The spill happened around 9:50 a.m. near 37th Avenue Northeast and Highcrest Road, according to Hennepin County officials. There was no danger to nearby residents.

Crews said a truck operated by Horizon Commercial Pool Supply had just finished filling the chlorine tank for a pool at the Diamond 8 Terrace Apartments as a routine maintenance call when a container leaked, spilling the acid for three to four blocks, officials said.

The driver noticed the leak quickly and that the spill wasn’t very large, authorities said.

The chemicals usually are non-life threatening, unless you are smelling the fumes directly in a very close space, according to authorities.

After conducting atmospheric monitoring, authorities determined there's no hazard beyond the immediate area of the truck. As of Thursday afternoon, residents were being asked to remain indoors because of the foul odor in the area.

A contractor arrived at the scene, under the guidance of the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and other state agencies, to cleanup the area.

The leak impacted the cities of New Brighton, Roseville and St. Anthony. The North Suburban Hazardous Materials Response Team, which is comprised of New Brighton, Lake Johanna, Vadnais Heights and Falcon Heights fire departments, responded to the scene.
